Notes from MLML 10--16

Chapter 10:
Enter city, vitality. Excitement.
Gazed in wonder at lights strung out.
Seemed indeed to peasant girl that they needed the world to laugh in.
Men and women danced together, holding each other.
Stirring about dance, fear spread through her, up from soles of her feet, an unnamed fear.
Run, but anxiety blinded her, tripped and fell facedown.
She who had traveled night and day with courage and confidence now succumbed to despair at the strangeness around her.
The night has no eyes. Use yours.
Women sleeping in shadows of houses gave her new courage, tomorrow I shall go on.
Awoke, she waled, asking directions of those she met, sun in sky.
The hill curved upward steeply. Vendors trays balanced on their heads formed a continual stream.
She had gone halfway up when the road made a curve to reveal another hill.
She saw a hotel, massive building rose three stories and dominated the city that sprawled beneath. Tonton description is not enough. Not exaggeration.
The palace was grander than the description.
Desiree hurried around the last few curves in the road. Approaching the hotel from side.
Desiree came to the front gate, opened at the center, where the driveway led from the road to entrance.
Two uniformed guards who opened the gates, quickly let in guests, and closed them to stand guard inside.
She studied that scene, some vendors on the grounds, Artisans, displaying paintings, woodcarvings, sculptures, embroidered cloth.
Put one foot out, the other will follow.
Tried to push through, ask, no. Pushed her away.
Guard scowled, he said no one was selling, no one was buying.
No money.
Woman,, where, nothing to sell or buy.
Desiree stood waiting, go on then, if you must, it will gain you nothing.
Also push on, exercising patience with each vendor in turn, the girl worked her way to the gate.
One step inside, and the other guard,  PEASANT PIG, get back with the SCUM where you belong.
Laughed. The squat man, blood red face, threatening
NO SHOES, shaking bodies and laughing. Her mud caked feet, for vendors, plastic shoes, straw shoes, rubber thongs.
Ran down hill, through city, retracing her steps of the day before, wood met sea. Exhausted.
She sat for hours, no thinking.
Start thinking again. Night time, despair.
Corosol on branch of tree, big heavy,
Trade it with shoes, no equal.
Women selling dresses admired the fruit and took it.
Lucifus, that serpent, hates peasants. Groundkeeper. Never enter.
The man looked at peasant feet, shoes? Pray that to fit your feet, then chose a dress from stall.  Blue and reddest comb.
Even with the help of gods, for th poor all gates are difficult to enter, even the gates of heaven.

Chapter 11:
Desiree bathed in the sea, washed hair and combed the knots from it. Then slipped into her new blue dress and stuck the bright red comb in her hair. Lovely.
Confidence, spirit soared.
She had never worn shoes, her feet were large, long toes, pain, new experience in torture,
She needed to wear shoes to enter the gates of the CB. Had to endure.
Vendors opened the way for her to pass, and with others, letting her through.
Ridiculous peasants. Did you ever see such a gaudy comb as the one that girl is wearing.
Not understand, French.
Daniel. It is he.  Also spoke French.
Impatience of elder Beauxhomme. Insolence of peasants. Drove off.
Shall never leave these grounds again.
Desiree lived in a terror, but she lived so well. After everyone gone, kicked off shoes, eased her feet. Happiness.
Bathed in swimming pools.
Room beneath the room of Daniel.
She reached the pool and disappeared. She stood up and moved to the spot to see him, groan. Was he. Touched him.
I am her, i am here to keep you safe, he remembers all things.
Nothing to remember. But help him because of weakness. Put pn comb.
He held on her and lay beside him. Fell asleep.

Chapter 12:
Desiree awoke, someone shaken her.
A beautiful, dark mahogany colored woman.  Daniel godmother and nursemaid.
She put a deliberate distance between herself and Desiree. From madame to peasants.
Asked TM to go, but rejected. INSOLENCEW.
Daniel woke up.  Stayed because he slept an entire night without pain.
Hope. His responsibility.
Dad, sad eyed man entered, smiling. Looked Desiree.  My son TRYST with a peasants.
Explained for him. Both Daniel and nursemaid.
Pure madness. Teaching of the devil.
No answer, Desire felt chill go through her.
Daniel father never looked her.  The man was the cause of hunger the pain she had endured.
Work of Desiree, servants of Daniel.  What a care.
Wish of gods, also her wish.
Daniel grew stronger, stronger. Sleep finding himself in her arms, drew her into his. Moaned.
Talked about experienced, all things.
Love in the bright eyes of the young couple. Crisis of Daniel had passed, shall go. Father would reward you.
Confusion. Talked to Daniel, you shall be with me always. Without TM, lose health and strngth if she ever leaves. Die. I now belong to her.
Desiree is responsible for me, to you i gave a new responsibility, make my mistress into a grand demoiselle.
Dressmakers. Hair dressers.  Fashion clothes and shoes. Lovely women were jealous. Polished.
Desiree and Daniel, insulated by love, saw and heard only each others.
Desiree wanted to be his wife and also does not to be said. Wanted the mountains of this Jewel of the Antilles becomes green. For Asaka.
Desiree looked down and found a man who took a cigar. Afraid. No one is there, Lucifus?

Chapter 13:
Father stayed in France. Prepared for return.
Grand ball for the evening. Dignitaries, wealthy patrons and aristocracy.
Decorators. Excitement.  Presence of mistress.
Speechless because of language: african, chinese, italian and German.  Silence.
No confidence. She danced and no wrds to thank her admirers and thank for them. Supreme.
Bowed and smiled. Happy.
Month before, picked from garbage buckets, now was a lady of elegance.
Desiree, chose one and leave. Not. Can not leave.
God did curse you, deep the love of peasant and patron runs, the bonds bind them. Hurts deeper.
Go before this love destroys you, us.
Terrified, ran into the garden and stood looking around. Frenzy. Despair.
Lufifus, heard about her, curiosity aabout his resentment. Papa Ge had taken possession of him, part of darkness. Reached Desiree.
Butterfly sensed her terror and flew. Overwhelmed.

Chapter 14:
Andrea return from abroad, Papa let his son visit the Hotel to celebrate. Left early and grew late.
Balcony, Desire waited for him.
Agwe, Erzulie, have mercy, protect me.
Comforted, Desiree started to turn oto enter her room, stopped.  A squat man standing in the garden. Anccient dream.
Asked Daniel about promised with Andrea.
Yes, but young are no long bound by the wishes of the old. Little Andrea has grown into a beauty.
Daniel had fully recovered, days with dad and nights returned home, flushed with happiness and lavish in his praise. Perfect of men.
Papa received Andrea  and he took plan of the event, invitations were printed/. Did not invited Desiree.  From balcony to see the grand reception.
Admiring. Andrea was perfect, tall, white skin with hair the texture of cornsilk, greatting in different language. Forced into a numb.
Andrea and Daniel danced, gazed into each others eyes and talked, laughed, face close, move to mosic, arms tightened around each other and cheek touch cheek. Smile and hwispered.
Took home, From Andrea, keep Desiree into the palace, then Daniel was removed from room of Daniel into a small room of her own and far with Daniel.

Chapter 15:
No eat, exhausted, lost weight, Daniel is away, gone south.
The strength of the hand is in the mans not the boys .Like the rule of kingdoms is in the hands of kings and not princes. STUPID GIRL. Cheat the gods. C
Change clothes.
Father has announced the date of Daniel wedding to Andrea. The time is set.
Wanted Daniel to reture.
She listened to his limping steps on the stairs, heard the thumping of his cane on the rug as he reached the landing to his rooms.
What have I down to displeasure.  No but my life that I have pledged to Andrea.
Then must I leave, no TM stay I love you but you need to stay with me.
Erzuliie calling from window, lost your comb. Gift from gods.
Papa Ge said Daniel should pay. Take the knife, strike hard, strike deep, let his blood flow heavy. He betrayed you. Shaking of her body.
She had saved him, she is hers. But left he room and walked barefoot down the long hall.. Opened and entered. Sleeping man, Raised the knife high to plunge. No, she ran, ran down the steps,
She loved Daniel and he loved her. And she might have killed h im.
Peasant swine, mother of a dog.  TRICK. , never intended to kill Daniel.
You disgrace this place with your stench.
She had become so weakened that her knees buckled.
Lucifus laughed, A likely story. No one trust her.  Craziness. Shrug. TM, the way of the world.

Chapter 16:
Wedding approached.
Food, custome, stage.
Skies grew dark and darker.
Wedding day dawned, the skies had again darkened, thunder rolled like boulder hitting against clouds. Vendors sleeping at the sides of road.
Bright island flowers.  Desiree sat among vendors at the road. Two weeks not eaten, not slept.
Suffering the pain of her dislocated shoulders. Agwe, truth is not where eyes can see. Daniel greatest love is for me.
Church bells clanged. Outside the church, Deisree, despite the pain of her dangling, useless arm, attempted to stand where Daniel could see her.
Daniel left his car and entered the church, Cheers, long, MISTAKE.  Happiness inside.
The thunder growled like a dog straining toward an enemy, the peasant girl kept waiting for the miracle that seemed less and less likely. Madame came and Desiree heart leaped in expectation.
Daniel limped up to gate, happy face and threw out handfuls of coins, on ground, scrambling and snatching, grabbing.
Looked at the gate, their eyes locked a moment, he too turned and stroke away. Hadnt seen her, just as his father.
The peasant girl glanced down at her mud feet, ragged dress, cried out.
Thunder rocked the countryside. Attempt to blot out the sound.  Strong gusts of wind blew, whipping up the earth, flinging pebbles against the car. The crowd fell back.
Police kept pushing, kept swingging at the peasants. She lost her footing.
Weak from hunger and pain, she lacked the strngth or will to pick herself up.
Swarms of papillons appeared on the hill, big beautiful butterflies hit against the heads, the mouth the yes of peasants.
Then papillons fluttered thickly over the body of the peasant girl lying on road, flew away. Lay unnoticed for a long time. Father came and asked Lucifus to clean the road. He dumped her at the side of road to await the GARBAGE COLLECTORS.
Vengeance, roar trembled the entire island. Rain, tears.

Note MLML 6789

Chapter Six
Irresistible urge of the tropics
Peasants worked with renewed vigor, clearing dead branches from plots and rebuilding homes.
Desiree felt no joy in the awakening life around her.  Scenes of brilliance to startle the eyes.
How, when, this is the way I must go,
Put one foot out, the other is sure to follow.  She loved Mama and she did not want to leave.
Ask Tonton again about distance, far, kilometers and kilometers, along forest, runs by sea. Another road corsses, leading east.
Went to M. Bienconnu, who are Beauxhomme, from where do they come.
Cherished concubine, adoring father, Palace. Black mountains.
Gabriel Beauxhomme was Jean, and Armand. French, Napoleon.
Fell love with a peasant girl, La Belle, black, smooth, slanting eyes and pretty white teeth.
Peasant girl had a boy.  Beaufiles. Then changed to Beauxhomme.
Fought for opposition, revolution VS France and Napoleon.
Son claimed the castle as his inheritance, Castle Beauxhomme. Curse.
Trigged Desiree. She believed she belongs in the big city, he is waiting for her.
Can not love. History has cast out fate in stone. Words chilled her.  Stood outside.
Julian noticed her, talked, leave the cillage, must go tonight, Young Daniel is in danger, he needs me, must go. Road is too hard for men and mules. Anxious to leave before Mama arried.
Not children, sixteen years old, strong, no fear.  Bravery can sometimes be the mark of a fool.
Mama arrived.
A grand homme does need a poor peasant girl.
Agwe and Erzulie saved Daniel from Papa Ge on teh promise of my soul.
Mama believes Ti Moune is our treasure. Treasure that need contact watching have already lost.
Real joy only comes in the future.
Argument between Julian and Mama, Desiree made a move to leave the clearing, But Euralie saw her ease away, grabbed hand and consults gods.

Chapter seven:
Up to hills, talk to gods.
Mama was anxious to make important plea to gods. Only simple question. But this prayer for the mind and heart of a foolish girl might perhaps meddle in some fiendish scheme of a mad god.
What if they decided Desiree had to stay, to risk her love, on a whim of the gods.
Darkness deepened, moon rose. Woman feared no shadow, feared but one thing to lose Ti Moune, They walked in drumbeats.  Awge, your child has come. Guides her.
She saw Papa Ge, leaning against a tree, blended in with the shadows, but his head, the cigar clenched in his bloody brown teeth, his gums and tongue gleaming blood red. Smiled at her
She screamed but no one heard. Drums kept on beating.
Doubts arouse, what is that night Agwe and Erzulie did not hear her plea. Just conjured up a dream. Only a dream.
Ti Moune and Mama Euralie stood outside the houngfor and Mama called to talk with Gods.
Silence but dim light, Voice, daughter, petite enfant whom I abandoned on the hill these years, missed you.
Mama, Virgin stood cloaked in piety, She left her village, it was for her and she gave her life. Not from lip of virgin, came from a shadowy figures, tall man, thin.  Put in the tree.
Mama Euralie comforted Desiree.
Outside, the drums beat loud, louder, fast, faster, the voices rose.  Desiree inside fearfully, fearing silence, fearing the presence of the gods.
A woman emerged, tall, broad, beautiful. Her white lace dress sparkling and heavy with beads. No such cloth existed in thier village, no such woman. Vain Erzulie. “ Black, beautiful Desiree, I am Erzulie, loa of love, I do not hold you to the vow you made on that stressful night.
Not a dream, real existed.
Daniel life was as impossible a distance from yours. As the road you need to go.
A man voice came from an old woman, as old as M. Biencunnu, faced Erzulie, her youthful eyes flashing with anger and mischief in the wrinkled face.
Agwe, you are hear.  Decided to come, here you are to undo plans that I have made.
No compromise,
Let her be unhappy, what designs? Reponsibile for her mom death. Punishment for lies. Distortion. Agwe saved the child.
Child became burden. The blameless peasants must carry the burden of your guilt? Who support Asaka laziness. But Agwe caused Asaka pain.  Rage destroyed her, erodes her power.
Human destroyed her, by needs, the houses they must build, their ships, the statues that must be carved, the charcoal they have to burn.
Sniverlers.
Peasants held their breath in a stillness meant to keep each blameless. Agwe gone made.
If there’s no love on the world, Agwe can not endure the loss of power bit by bit.
Cruel of gods, selfish.
Desiree wanted to escape.
Agwe did not believe human soul.
Two gods stared at each other, anger matching angers. But sudden, Agwe said to Erzulie, they both need grand romance, can save them. Let them force people to save themselves, and their immortal souls. ----Islanders can not truly love each others.
Agwe was the most powerful gods, it shall be the end.
Papa Ge sat, grinning down,  He came for the vows given in trust be kept in trust.
Agwe did not like Papa Ge. There must be room for me in all your plans.
Then Papa Ge stepped over the grail, spend body of the old woman and walked toward Desiree, felt hot breath fan her cheek, she screamed, and ran away.

Chapter eight:
Fear spurred her on and desperation.
SHe putted distance between herself and those who loved her, her home and her brook, her past.
The peasant girl walked on for miles.
She drifted off to sleep, her thoughts on gods, what anger, hwo vain, how selfish, how pround and pretty were these gods to whom the gentle peasants humbled themselves.
She fell asleep.
Agwe tall, beautiful, his lofty head of the richest blue green seaweed decorated in gold.
Asaka sat sulking, looking drab and ragged in a brown dress.
Erzulie, forever lovely, paraded her self so vainly.
Papa Ge sat in background witha  smug smile on his mouth, his bloodied teeth clutching a cigar.
How far she came and how far should she have to go. SHe walked from woods to raod.
Desiree walked up to the nearest vendor and asked to to Beauxhomme.
Not knwon and said black mountains was far.
Before go black mountains, first go big cities. By walking was seemed ridiculous.
Laughed.  To dreamer all things are possible.
The laughter of the vendors confused and shamed her.
Agains walked all nights.
She saw rows of neat little houses spraling over the countryside. Going up to a woman who wore pretty contton dress and a head scarf of bright print.
Beggar. Twisted shoulders to better look down at the peasant girl.  Black mountain was still far.
Desiree felt gloom descending. Fear and determination.  Death for a girl. Discouraged. She abandoned all thought of sleep.
In the morning she awoke. She saw across the road a tall, havy woman sitting bent over a big iron pot.  Hungry, smell of frying pork and plantains.  Can you give me some. Why
No money? No. Tearing. Give up easy, die easy. Took few pork and some slices of fried plantains and hot pepper. Learn about patience.
She ate all, she bome painfully hungry. Stopped at a grillot stand, road seemed longer, her destination farther away.
Waiting, why, exercising patience. Not reason,
A man heard Black mountains, far, but not so far, one day or three at the most, he is rich,.
Anxious once again to be gone, the peasant girl walked quickly away, the woman called her back, bread to prepare.

Chapter nine:
Seventh day, came to place where forest and sea met. Clear, turquoise, reflecting the sky.
An orphan girl, alone in the woods, alone on the road. Incredible beauty on Jewel. Thanked Agwe for her safe arrival. Fall asleep.
She woke up and aaw a young girl stooping to collect things tossded with seaweeds. Searching for foods.  Parents were taken away by sea.
Taking to the nicest paretns a child can have, a wishing cage.
One keeps the world open the spirit free in a wishing cage.
How? Close eyes and wish hard, to capture  papillons and how to make a wish.
They searched but not find any butterflies at the seashores. Then moved to woods and found one.
Always know your wish, you must want that wish so that it comes through to the tips of your fingers. Smiled.
Once more waited, sat beneath the tree as the sun sank in the west. Lovely papillon came to rest on same bush. Little girl moved slovwly.  And reached out her hands, butterfly let her appraoch.
Wish, do not tell and any, then go through forest, find vendors, then exercise patience, sleep in woods, then travel for four and five daysm then found people who knos Julian and Euralie, then told them that you were send by Desiree, your hopes of being their new Desiree. Wish shall come true.
Desiree watched her go, one of Desiree wishes would be granted too.
Fo rthem to be happy.

MLML 4-5

4
No one expected two men to find the stranger origin.
Desiree did not think about that, anxious about his patience.
He grew feverish. She forced tea past his teeth while cradling his head to her chest to guide the liquid down his throat.
One day found out his splintered led swollen and turning green. Even in big hospitals where men also died of such wounds.
Must not die. Pray, pray hard, fear more the revenge of the rich with their police than I fear the revenge of the gods.
Wheres M. Julian.? Punish? Find?
His fever rose, poisoned leg grew worse. Taking knife to scald the wound. Dug soap from the soap rocks at its side. Washed leg and wrapped it with leaves that Madame Bonsante had brought.
Desiree did work with reluctance.  Should be helper rather than looking for man if you much, then rushed to patient.
Man eyes were open, stare around the mud hut. Then closed eyes in sleep, worst passed? Get well?
Opened again, to recognize her and show gladness, knelt beside him, looked into his eyes, try to speak, pain. Put her fingers to his lips, eyes smiled at her.
Rains came, sun threatened all life in the village with its blistering rays. Went out. Instant night. Raindrops pounded leaves.
Peasants abandoned prayers the next and went scurrying to save pots and pans being scattered over the ground. The wind strengthened.
In panic, parents snatched up babies and toddlers.
Flood the low lying lands. Mud huts dissolved and sank beneath the thicken currents. Trees were uprooted.
Day seeped into day, night seeped into night. The distinction between day and night was lost in the hammering of the rain. The world had become water and mountains. Air was wet.
A smell of death invaded the cabin through his festering scores. Some left the shelter, choosing the pounding of the rain. Wasnt rain the nectar of the gods? Keep hope alive.
Die, not let him die, but what loa entered your black body to give you the power to hold back death.
Caring him carefully.
What disorder when land meets sea. Sucked down into rising waters, to nourish another generation, than to suffer such shame.
Suddenly window flew open, a shadow appeared. Thicker, larger, then formed itself into a man, a man in black who perched inside the window, clothes as dark as night. Not a man, a demon.
Mouth gleamed red, blood red. Cigar clenched between brown teeth with blood.
Stood before her. Papa Ge, messenger of death. Evil power, she made her hands into claws and held them to his face to keep him at bay. Helplessness.
Protect him using my soul.
Disappeared. Calm, You are not alone. I am here, i will keep you here.

5.
Blue sky, miracle of morning, clear sky. Water rushing off. Laughed and shouted thier victory.
Brightness of the day.
Nothing but favor poor peasants.
Smile, they were one.
Men came, noise, big bird. Helicopter. Curious men.
Dressed in rain slickers and hip boots, slipping and sliding. Guided by peasants.
Monsieur Gabriel Beauxhomme. Son Daniel Beauxhomme.
Gentle smile.
What had they done to you. Carried him out of cabin and back to waiting helicopter.
Good woman, your man Julian is a good man, intelligent, directions easily to find. Five gourdes.
Off
Unshed tears brightened her eyes. The sad eyed man had not seen her. Not different as rest.
Tonton Julian returned seven days later.  NOT UNIFORMED.
No direction. But even the longest road must end.
House, a palace. Hotel.
Lost mule in a mudslide on first day.
Bad storm, but contempt. Bare bone to a dog, sharpen his teeth not to fill stomach.
Our land will be rich by seeding.

Five senses, the real one

Sight
They were big, fat vegetables formed with the richness that moisture and good soil produced. 18
Then she stopped seeing, a car was racing past on distant road. 14
At first she saw nothing, then she made out a silver glow in dark, she drew back into shadows, listening. She looked out agin, she searched along the road for people who used ally are out there chatting in quiet groups in dark. 29
The following day his eyes were open again when Desiree entered the hut, this time he recognized her, showed gladness to see her. 40
They looked out the window, the. Out the door at the miracle of morning, looking mountains, where stone gleamed in the clear sky. 48

Hearing
The peasant girl had heard that M. Galimar and a daughter her age, and he sent her across the sea.18
The she strained, listening to the fading sound of its engine.  14
As she listened tot he camionettes passing on road, for he croaking frogs the rasping crickets and the hooting birds in the woods, she knew that nothing in the world could compare with the sweet softness of pure brook water. 21
She pulled it on, but the tear kept widening the rending sound getting louder, louder, louder. Filled her ears, shutting out the noise of rampaging insects. 27
She heard rasping breathing inside. 29

Touch
He bent and scooped up a handful of soil, it ran through his fingers like sand. 13
She had the smoothest skin, the peasant girl. 21
She went up to car and touched it, she, Desiree, touching a car, it was the first she had ever touched. 29
She felt somebody, warm, held against the seat by the steering wheel. A man, she knew from the feel of his chest. 30
She moved her hands gently over his face, his forehead, his hair. How soft his skin, like a girls. 30

Smell
A smell of death invaded the cabin though his festering sores.  44
And pale in the mat. The muddle floor, smelling the stench of his rotting flesh, 51
Mud huts dissolved and sank beneath the thickening currents. 41
The wind swept water into terrible waves that reached up to hill and hit against the door of cabin. 45
Weeds, grass, plants jumped to life, painting the landscapes brilliant green. 55

Taste
the world had become water and mountains, the air was wet. 43
He grinned around a cigar clenched between brown teeth that were dripping with blood. 46
The peasant girl walked with her toes curled away from the hot earth over to the bucket of water in the shade of tree. 15
The old woman drank some, the peasant girl drank the rest,
They had curled from lack of moisture and awaited but one soark to go up in flames. 40

2) Monsieur Julian, where is her? She rocked in despair. Dear Jesus, what have I done that my old age should guard only memories of despair! You gods! Spiteful Agwe, boastful Damballah, who claims to hold up the world, deceitful Erzulie, whose claim is to be the mother of love, in all my years of faith, why have you sought only to destroy me?  (43)
3) Is it not better, then, that we be sucked down into these rising waters, to nourish another generation, than to suffer such shame!    (45)
