Note MLML 6789

Chapter Six
Irresistible urge of the tropics
Peasants worked with renewed vigor, clearing dead branches from plots and rebuilding homes.
Desiree felt no joy in the awakening life around her.  Scenes of brilliance to startle the eyes.
How, when, this is the way I must go,
Put one foot out, the other is sure to follow.  She loved Mama and she did not want to leave.
Ask Tonton again about distance, far, kilometers and kilometers, along forest, runs by sea. Another road corsses, leading east.
Went to M. Bienconnu, who are Beauxhomme, from where do they come.
Cherished concubine, adoring father, Palace. Black mountains.
Gabriel Beauxhomme was Jean, and Armand. French, Napoleon.
Fell love with a peasant girl, La Belle, black, smooth, slanting eyes and pretty white teeth.
Peasant girl had a boy.  Beaufiles. Then changed to Beauxhomme.
Fought for opposition, revolution VS France and Napoleon.
Son claimed the castle as his inheritance, Castle Beauxhomme. Curse.
Trigged Desiree. She believed she belongs in the big city, he is waiting for her.
Can not love. History has cast out fate in stone. Words chilled her.  Stood outside.
Julian noticed her, talked, leave the cillage, must go tonight, Young Daniel is in danger, he needs me, must go. Road is too hard for men and mules. Anxious to leave before Mama arried.
Not children, sixteen years old, strong, no fear.  Bravery can sometimes be the mark of a fool.
Mama arrived.
A grand homme does need a poor peasant girl.
Agwe and Erzulie saved Daniel from Papa Ge on teh promise of my soul.
Mama believes Ti Moune is our treasure. Treasure that need contact watching have already lost.
Real joy only comes in the future.
Argument between Julian and Mama, Desiree made a move to leave the clearing, But Euralie saw her ease away, grabbed hand and consults gods.

Chapter seven:
Up to hills, talk to gods.
Mama was anxious to make important plea to gods. Only simple question. But this prayer for the mind and heart of a foolish girl might perhaps meddle in some fiendish scheme of a mad god.
What if they decided Desiree had to stay, to risk her love, on a whim of the gods.
Darkness deepened, moon rose. Woman feared no shadow, feared but one thing to lose Ti Moune, They walked in drumbeats.  Awge, your child has come. Guides her.
She saw Papa Ge, leaning against a tree, blended in with the shadows, but his head, the cigar clenched in his bloody brown teeth, his gums and tongue gleaming blood red. Smiled at her
She screamed but no one heard. Drums kept on beating.
Doubts arouse, what is that night Agwe and Erzulie did not hear her plea. Just conjured up a dream. Only a dream.
Ti Moune and Mama Euralie stood outside the houngfor and Mama called to talk with Gods.
Silence but dim light, Voice, daughter, petite enfant whom I abandoned on the hill these years, missed you.
Mama, Virgin stood cloaked in piety, She left her village, it was for her and she gave her life. Not from lip of virgin, came from a shadowy figures, tall man, thin.  Put in the tree.
Mama Euralie comforted Desiree.
Outside, the drums beat loud, louder, fast, faster, the voices rose.  Desiree inside fearfully, fearing silence, fearing the presence of the gods.
A woman emerged, tall, broad, beautiful. Her white lace dress sparkling and heavy with beads. No such cloth existed in thier village, no such woman. Vain Erzulie. “ Black, beautiful Desiree, I am Erzulie, loa of love, I do not hold you to the vow you made on that stressful night.
Not a dream, real existed.
Daniel life was as impossible a distance from yours. As the road you need to go.
A man voice came from an old woman, as old as M. Biencunnu, faced Erzulie, her youthful eyes flashing with anger and mischief in the wrinkled face.
Agwe, you are hear.  Decided to come, here you are to undo plans that I have made.
No compromise,
Let her be unhappy, what designs? Reponsibile for her mom death. Punishment for lies. Distortion. Agwe saved the child.
Child became burden. The blameless peasants must carry the burden of your guilt? Who support Asaka laziness. But Agwe caused Asaka pain.  Rage destroyed her, erodes her power.
Human destroyed her, by needs, the houses they must build, their ships, the statues that must be carved, the charcoal they have to burn.
Sniverlers.
Peasants held their breath in a stillness meant to keep each blameless. Agwe gone made.
If there’s no love on the world, Agwe can not endure the loss of power bit by bit.
Cruel of gods, selfish.
Desiree wanted to escape.
Agwe did not believe human soul.
Two gods stared at each other, anger matching angers. But sudden, Agwe said to Erzulie, they both need grand romance, can save them. Let them force people to save themselves, and their immortal souls. ----Islanders can not truly love each others.
Agwe was the most powerful gods, it shall be the end.
Papa Ge sat, grinning down,  He came for the vows given in trust be kept in trust.
Agwe did not like Papa Ge. There must be room for me in all your plans.
Then Papa Ge stepped over the grail, spend body of the old woman and walked toward Desiree, felt hot breath fan her cheek, she screamed, and ran away.

Chapter eight:
Fear spurred her on and desperation.
SHe putted distance between herself and those who loved her, her home and her brook, her past.
The peasant girl walked on for miles.
She drifted off to sleep, her thoughts on gods, what anger, hwo vain, how selfish, how pround and pretty were these gods to whom the gentle peasants humbled themselves.
She fell asleep.
Agwe tall, beautiful, his lofty head of the richest blue green seaweed decorated in gold.
Asaka sat sulking, looking drab and ragged in a brown dress.
Erzulie, forever lovely, paraded her self so vainly.
Papa Ge sat in background witha  smug smile on his mouth, his bloodied teeth clutching a cigar.
How far she came and how far should she have to go. SHe walked from woods to raod.
Desiree walked up to the nearest vendor and asked to to Beauxhomme.
Not knwon and said black mountains was far.
Before go black mountains, first go big cities. By walking was seemed ridiculous.
Laughed.  To dreamer all things are possible.
The laughter of the vendors confused and shamed her.
Agains walked all nights.
She saw rows of neat little houses spraling over the countryside. Going up to a woman who wore pretty contton dress and a head scarf of bright print.
Beggar. Twisted shoulders to better look down at the peasant girl.  Black mountain was still far.
Desiree felt gloom descending. Fear and determination.  Death for a girl. Discouraged. She abandoned all thought of sleep.
In the morning she awoke. She saw across the road a tall, havy woman sitting bent over a big iron pot.  Hungry, smell of frying pork and plantains.  Can you give me some. Why
No money? No. Tearing. Give up easy, die easy. Took few pork and some slices of fried plantains and hot pepper. Learn about patience.
She ate all, she bome painfully hungry. Stopped at a grillot stand, road seemed longer, her destination farther away.
Waiting, why, exercising patience. Not reason,
A man heard Black mountains, far, but not so far, one day or three at the most, he is rich,.
Anxious once again to be gone, the peasant girl walked quickly away, the woman called her back, bread to prepare.

Chapter nine:
Seventh day, came to place where forest and sea met. Clear, turquoise, reflecting the sky.
An orphan girl, alone in the woods, alone on the road. Incredible beauty on Jewel. Thanked Agwe for her safe arrival. Fall asleep.
She woke up and aaw a young girl stooping to collect things tossded with seaweeds. Searching for foods.  Parents were taken away by sea.
Taking to the nicest paretns a child can have, a wishing cage.
One keeps the world open the spirit free in a wishing cage.
How? Close eyes and wish hard, to capture  papillons and how to make a wish.
They searched but not find any butterflies at the seashores. Then moved to woods and found one.
Always know your wish, you must want that wish so that it comes through to the tips of your fingers. Smiled.
Once more waited, sat beneath the tree as the sun sank in the west. Lovely papillon came to rest on same bush. Little girl moved slovwly.  And reached out her hands, butterfly let her appraoch.
Wish, do not tell and any, then go through forest, find vendors, then exercise patience, sleep in woods, then travel for four and five daysm then found people who knos Julian and Euralie, then told them that you were send by Desiree, your hopes of being their new Desiree. Wish shall come true.
Desiree watched her go, one of Desiree wishes would be granted too.
Fo rthem to be happy.

MLML 4-5

4
No one expected two men to find the stranger origin.
Desiree did not think about that, anxious about his patience.
He grew feverish. She forced tea past his teeth while cradling his head to her chest to guide the liquid down his throat.
One day found out his splintered led swollen and turning green. Even in big hospitals where men also died of such wounds.
Must not die. Pray, pray hard, fear more the revenge of the rich with their police than I fear the revenge of the gods.
Wheres M. Julian.? Punish? Find?
His fever rose, poisoned leg grew worse. Taking knife to scald the wound. Dug soap from the soap rocks at its side. Washed leg and wrapped it with leaves that Madame Bonsante had brought.
Desiree did work with reluctance.  Should be helper rather than looking for man if you much, then rushed to patient.
Man eyes were open, stare around the mud hut. Then closed eyes in sleep, worst passed? Get well?
Opened again, to recognize her and show gladness, knelt beside him, looked into his eyes, try to speak, pain. Put her fingers to his lips, eyes smiled at her.
Rains came, sun threatened all life in the village with its blistering rays. Went out. Instant night. Raindrops pounded leaves.
Peasants abandoned prayers the next and went scurrying to save pots and pans being scattered over the ground. The wind strengthened.
In panic, parents snatched up babies and toddlers.
Flood the low lying lands. Mud huts dissolved and sank beneath the thicken currents. Trees were uprooted.
Day seeped into day, night seeped into night. The distinction between day and night was lost in the hammering of the rain. The world had become water and mountains. Air was wet.
A smell of death invaded the cabin through his festering scores. Some left the shelter, choosing the pounding of the rain. Wasnt rain the nectar of the gods? Keep hope alive.
Die, not let him die, but what loa entered your black body to give you the power to hold back death.
Caring him carefully.
What disorder when land meets sea. Sucked down into rising waters, to nourish another generation, than to suffer such shame.
Suddenly window flew open, a shadow appeared. Thicker, larger, then formed itself into a man, a man in black who perched inside the window, clothes as dark as night. Not a man, a demon.
Mouth gleamed red, blood red. Cigar clenched between brown teeth with blood.
Stood before her. Papa Ge, messenger of death. Evil power, she made her hands into claws and held them to his face to keep him at bay. Helplessness.
Protect him using my soul.
Disappeared. Calm, You are not alone. I am here, i will keep you here.

5.
Blue sky, miracle of morning, clear sky. Water rushing off. Laughed and shouted thier victory.
Brightness of the day.
Nothing but favor poor peasants.
Smile, they were one.
Men came, noise, big bird. Helicopter. Curious men.
Dressed in rain slickers and hip boots, slipping and sliding. Guided by peasants.
Monsieur Gabriel Beauxhomme. Son Daniel Beauxhomme.
Gentle smile.
What had they done to you. Carried him out of cabin and back to waiting helicopter.
Good woman, your man Julian is a good man, intelligent, directions easily to find. Five gourdes.
Off
Unshed tears brightened her eyes. The sad eyed man had not seen her. Not different as rest.
Tonton Julian returned seven days later.  NOT UNIFORMED.
No direction. But even the longest road must end.
House, a palace. Hotel.
Lost mule in a mudslide on first day.
Bad storm, but contempt. Bare bone to a dog, sharpen his teeth not to fill stomach.
Our land will be rich by seeding.

Five senses, the real one

Sight
They were big, fat vegetables formed with the richness that moisture and good soil produced. 18
Then she stopped seeing, a car was racing past on distant road. 14
At first she saw nothing, then she made out a silver glow in dark, she drew back into shadows, listening. She looked out agin, she searched along the road for people who used ally are out there chatting in quiet groups in dark. 29
The following day his eyes were open again when Desiree entered the hut, this time he recognized her, showed gladness to see her. 40
They looked out the window, the. Out the door at the miracle of morning, looking mountains, where stone gleamed in the clear sky. 48

Hearing
The peasant girl had heard that M. Galimar and a daughter her age, and he sent her across the sea.18
The she strained, listening to the fading sound of its engine.  14
As she listened tot he camionettes passing on road, for he croaking frogs the rasping crickets and the hooting birds in the woods, she knew that nothing in the world could compare with the sweet softness of pure brook water. 21
She pulled it on, but the tear kept widening the rending sound getting louder, louder, louder. Filled her ears, shutting out the noise of rampaging insects. 27
She heard rasping breathing inside. 29

Touch
He bent and scooped up a handful of soil, it ran through his fingers like sand. 13
She had the smoothest skin, the peasant girl. 21
She went up to car and touched it, she, Desiree, touching a car, it was the first she had ever touched. 29
She felt somebody, warm, held against the seat by the steering wheel. A man, she knew from the feel of his chest. 30
She moved her hands gently over his face, his forehead, his hair. How soft his skin, like a girls. 30

Smell
A smell of death invaded the cabin though his festering sores.  44
And pale in the mat. The muddle floor, smelling the stench of his rotting flesh, 51
Mud huts dissolved and sank beneath the thickening currents. 41
The wind swept water into terrible waves that reached up to hill and hit against the door of cabin. 45
Weeds, grass, plants jumped to life, painting the landscapes brilliant green. 55

Taste
the world had become water and mountains, the air was wet. 43
He grinned around a cigar clenched between brown teeth that were dripping with blood. 46
The peasant girl walked with her toes curled away from the hot earth over to the bucket of water in the shade of tree. 15
The old woman drank some, the peasant girl drank the rest,
They had curled from lack of moisture and awaited but one soark to go up in flames. 40

Reflection on oral presentation

I love performance on the stage because every performance I play on the stage would help me to develop a lot, and doing a reflection on the performance would help me to understand and comprehend my strength and weakness on performing roundly.
In the before, after I finished my performance, I would recall what I did is good and what should I do better next time in a short time period. But I believe write down strength and weakness is a good way to help me remember my strength and weakness. However, this time, Ms. Guarino asked us to do an oral presentation to judge ourselves, we can bring out note but we can not write down full sentence. In the first time I had no idea what should I write first, so I chose to listen what others spoke and how they manage their speaking time in each section.  Then after I listened two of them, I begin to write down several main points in the note, in the study hall I tried first time to speak oral presentation with my note, but after I began to speak my oral, I found out that I added some extra information every time compared with the original text I prepared to write. During the analysis of my movement on the stage and also the staging setting. I began to think about why I needed to do this action or why I decided to use this background color in this scene. Then I began to remember what I did in each scene and also the reason why I did those action, those actions are helping me to express my emotions and sometimes the actions helped me to interact with others, which also show connections between me and others.
However, during the real oral presentation, I did not know what happened on me, maybe its nervous or anxious, I did twice recordings, the first one after I spoke the introduction part one minute, I found out that I missed speaking several points and there were many grammar mistakes I made in talking about performing. At that time I was very nervous and I tried to calm down and let myself treat this thing in a peace of mind. Then in the second time trying to record oral presentation, I believed I spoke the introduction and staging adaptation and examples of performances, those sections I believed I did a great job, not only I summarized what I did and also I can use several reasons to support my answer. But in analysis literature feature and conclusion part, I think I may miss reporting some details and also at that time period, I found out hat I made many grammar mistakes.  For example in the literature feature part, I did not refer what Danticat mainly drew attention in Haitian revolution impact, and also how the cultural difference and generation gap influenced the relationship between mom and daughters.
But in general, I really loved this oral presentation because it helped me to think roundly about my performance on the stage, and this recording would be a great resource for me to develop my performance skill next time.

Oral presentation

 • understanding of the text(s)
 • critical perspectives on the dramatic potential of the text(s)
• insights into the performance process experienced from page to stage
• critical evaluation of their particular role and contribution to this process of transformation or adaptation and realization.

Oral presentation:
In Edwidge Danticat's story Krik Krak, it mainly focus on the harsh life Haitian people experienced during that time period and how did they overcome the difficulties or were beaten by the difficulties. In those many interesting stories, there's one story talked about a daughter in an immigrant family, which she was preparing for her wedding.
This time I performed the show Caroline's Wedding in story Krik Krak. The reason why I chose play this story was that it was interesting and realistic, it talked about the connection between fathers and daughters, and how did the Haitian culture and American culture influenced the mom and two daughters. Which made me become interested in editing it into the performance.
Because I played the role of dad, so there's less direct information that describes dad in the book that can help me to write down dad's characteristic and his relationship with his wife and his daughters, Caroline and Grace. But however, from several places in the conversations between Caroline and Grace, they always missed their dad and always wanted to see dad again. Because of those conversations and some potential description of dad, I would write down lines of dad and also I asked my teammates, Betty and Kat about their understanding of dad from the book, those advices also helped me to build the character of dad. And in my mind, even though dad is a Haitian guy but he loved Grace and Caroline, and because of this love, he understood each choice they did.
Because in Krik Krak, the author always wanted to show that the Haitian people were in struggle, they always fought for life but they never lost their believes. In the previous stories, 1937, even mom was in prison and she knew she did not have much time left, but she still contained confidence toward everything. In the night women, even though the main character was a prostitude, but she did that only for her son. This belief also shows in this story,  Caroline's Wedding, the main characters, Grace and Caroline were both Haitians but they had the green cards of United States, which the green cards were the hope for these two characters, or even the whole Haitians because they were in chaos and America was a good place for them to avoid war, the author used those two main characters as the miniature of the whole Haitians. Then during several times, like Caroline talked with mom, Grace talked with Caroline. They both referred the name of dad, which I could directly know that how important dad is in this family. And for dad, these two girl and his wife are the most important people in his mind.
What was difficulties in adapting the story into the performance is the dreaming part, because dad was unreal and we did not have much information compared with Grace and Caroline, so finding his characteristic and decided the plot involved him really challenged me. But I believe from our performance, audience can clearly found out that dad is an important component in the family, especially for his two daughters.
In order to do this performance perfectly, first thing our group did is to think about the start point and the end point. Because dad was died and he is very important in the family, which we made the start point which dad was dying and then the following development is followed by dad. One interesting thing in our story is that we developed dad's role, which even though he was only a ghost but he still missed his wife and daughters and because of this caring, he contributed a lot in order to protect his family members until the wedding night.
In order to perform dad's role actively, not only I need to analyze his characteristic but also I believe I need to interact with other family members on the stage. Which I put this caring into my lines and my actions. I need to show emotion change in order to let audience knew my personality and persistence. The setting was I as dad died in the hospital and then the place moved to haven to start my afterlife, so in the beginning I lay on the bed serenely. Grace and Caroline were crying beside me in order to show that dad is really important in the family, then the lights shut and I moved to the stage right where is the haven. We divided the stage into three parts, reality, dream, heaven, I always stood in right stage and sometimes went into middle stage as the dream to communicate with Caroline and Grace. In my right stage, in order to show the armosphere of heaven, I decided to not put any color of light to show the loneliness, and in the stage middle because it is the dream world, I used blue and red lights to indicate its variness and creativeness. Then in the beginning of the stage, when I went to the heaven, in order to perform that I am weak at that time when I first come to heaven, I coughed several times and used the crutch to support my body in order to show the weakness. But when I found out that I was alive, firstly I just called the name of my relatives: my wife, my daughters. Which this line I spoke very loudly in order to show my caring. Moreover, because I was a ghost, I can hear others conversation but my relatives can't hear me. Even though under this situation, I stilled asked Caroline that she needed to eat dinner with mom and also blamed myself that why I can not protect my daughters anymore. Then in the wedding night's eve, this day I dressed up and I did not use that crutch, because I knew my daughter will marry with Eric and I was very glad to know this. During this conversation with Caroline, I always smiled and congratulated her. And in the end I even hugged with her, this action I believed totally showed my love and caring toward my relatives. Because god reminded me before that I can touch the person who was familiar with me, or I will disappear immediately. But I still hugged with my daughter because I was really happy for her and also congratulated for myself that I won't be worried about my family anymore because Caroline found her mr.Right, Grace was mature enough and my wife can take care of herself. Then the lights shutted immediately which gave audiences a hind about dad's final destiny.
Because of this performance, I can totally understand the author's attitude toward the Haiti and also performed the role of dad gave me the idea experience of how family is important for every member in the family. Also I believed that from my performance both in lines and interactions, audience can feel the caring of father and how did the children of dad supported himself to continue living in this world.

Reflection on my final

For this performance project, Krk Krak. I choose to be the dad in Carolines wedding. Who he is the father of Grace and Caroline, but he already died in the story Krik Krak, then I had an idea about showing the story between the died father and two daughters, which I hope to see the growing of my daughters and also show the adaption of dad from hopelessness to happiness.
In my acting, I like the most part is I improve my speaking speed and volume. In the before, the practice trial, I also speak my lines in lower voice and audience may not hear my speaking and also I thought my speaking speed is a little bit fast because I wanted to show my worries toward my daughters. But this time, I improved it better. When I went into heaven, my speaking speed is fast and my voice is very loudly, I wanted to use the loud voice and fast speaking speed to show that I feel worried and I stayed in an unfamiliar situation. However, in the end, when I last time went into Carolines dream and talked with her about her marriage, I spoke very slowly and the voice is not too loud because of two reasons, first, after I died to Carolines wedding, there are ten years passed, which means dad is already old enough and did not have much time left. Also, this time, as Carolines father, I was not worried because my oldest daughter, Grace is already an American and my younger daughter now will be married and she found her happiness, as a father, theres nothing I need to worry about, which I use a softer voice and slower speaking speed to make the audience feel my emotion change on the stage. Also in the stage, we divided the stage into three parts, real world, dream. Heaven. Heaven is in stage right and after I died I always stood in the stage right to show my situation. And for my acting, I am satisfied on the speaking part, when I speak some lines, I will use some actions or gestures to emphasize my lines, which in this part I like the most.
Moreover, because dad is a died person in the original text in Krik Krak, so I could not find any direct information to help to depict dad. However, from Grace and Carolines conversation, I could get some information about dad personality and his contribution to the family, which I used these information to help me build the character of dad. In my acting, there are two places where I highlighted, the first one is when I first went into heaven and second time is when I talked with Caroline about her marriage. These two things are most important, but also there is one thing I wanted to illuminate, in the scene two where Grace and Caroline in dream, they found out me and they wanted to hug me but God said you can not touch the person who you are familiar with. So I just said : No you cannot touch me or come too close! However, in the last scene, last part when I said : I will always love, remember stay safely my love.  Then I hug with Caroline, even though in this time I know if I hug with my daughter I will disappear immediately, but I still hugged her because this time is my last time and my daughter will marry with a good person, theres no reason for me to not be happy and proud to my daughter. So in the end I hugged her and then the lights shut down which means the dream broke, and Caroline and Graces father, finally disappear from their life. But I think I emphasize this hug as the greatness of father and also the struggle to his fate.
The things I believed I need to improve is the interaction with light, because I thought I needed to follow with the light to speak my lines, and in this part I think I handled it badly, I think if theres more practice before the final draft, i will done it good. Moreover, I think I need to interact better with that walking stick, the original reason I wanted to use it because it as a support for the dad, it is a symbol of dad that can support dad to face life positively and also accompanied with him. But sometime I think I needed to show this symbol clearly, but I just have a rough idea in my mind, which I want to show that the walking stick is supporting myself, but when in the last wedding ceremony, I gave up that stick because I wont be worried about anything, I had no regret in the world, my daughters found their happiness and it is time for dad to leave.
